Unix Systems Management

Goals

This class provides a solid foundation on the most important features for managing the Unix operating systems. Topics covered include system initialization, file system hierarchy, account management, performance monitoring and network service configuration. While hands-on lab exercises will be conducted on the Linux platform, the course will include discussion of key differences between leading Unix implementations, such as Solaris, AIX and HP/UX.

  • Understand the principles of Unix system management
  • Solve practical problems encountered in administering Unix systems
  • Distinguish issues relative to standalone Unix systems vs. network configurations

Developers, workstation users, or server administrators needing to manage, install, configure, or understand Unix.

Prerequisites

The "Unix Operating System" course or equivalent experience is required. The "Unix Shell and awk Programming" course is desired.

Network services, including remote access, NFS, DNS, NIS, etc.
