Axis

About the Presentation


Axis is an open-source, Java-based web service toolkit from Apache. It is the successor to Apache SOAP. Mark will describe how to install Axis, write web service clients and write web services using this toolkit. He will also discuss the importance of the Web Services Description Language (WSDL) in the world of web services. Finally, the architecture of Axis will be explored, providing insight into why this is becoming the favorite tool for working with web services in Java.

About Mark Volkmann


Mark Volkmann holds an M.S. in Computer Science and has been a software consultant for Object Computing, Inc. in St. Louis since 1996. After several years as a C++ developer he switched to Java and has been working in Java since 1995. For the past two years he has focused on using XML with Java. As a consultant, Mark has assisted many companies with Java and XML application development.

Mark also has created and teaches many courses in Java and XML. They include: Introduction to Java, Java Syntax for Non-C Programmers, Java Programming, Advanced Java Programming, Creating Graphical User Interfaces Using Java (Swing), eXtensible Markup Language, XML Programming Using Java and Web Services Using Java.

Mark is a member of the St. Louis Java User Group steering committee and a regular presenter for that group. He has written for XML Journal and presented at XML DevCon conferences.
