OpenDDS featured in European Defense Conference
ST. LOUIS, MO - The Undersea Defence Technology conference in Europe is a premier gathering for naval warfare specialists. This year's event (UDT 2011) was held in London from June 7th through the 9th.
L-3 ELAC Nautik a Kiel-based German defense company, specializing in undersea technologies, presented a paper on a next generation of sonar products. This product architecture is called "openSonarSuite KaleidoScope" and is built utilizing OCI's open source product, OpenDDS. Sonar systems are very high volume, signal processing systems and processing the vast amounts of information generated in a timely manner requires a sophisticated real-time data distribution service. OpenDDS is a 21st century messaging system, based on an Object Management Group (OMG) specification which incorporates the lessons learned from the "message queuing" products of the 1990's. OCI had architects on-site in Kiel to train and assist in the L-3 team in formulating a solution to match the sonar system's requirements to the many capabilities offered by OpenDDS.
Dr. Ebrahim Moshiri, CEO of OCI, commented, "Naval systems around the world are following the lead of the US Navy, who are sponsoring our development of OpenDDS, in adopting open source, standards-based solutions as part of their critical infrastructure systems. We are seeing similar strategies being adopted by manufacturing, traffic management and finance in order for them to compete more effectively."
